Business Licences

Business licence applications must be submitted to the Town in writing using the appropriate application form and signed by the business owner or an authorized agent.

Applicants will be asked to provide information about the proposed business, including:

• Name of the business owner or licensee
• Business name
• Number of people working in the business
• Zoning classification of the premises
• Location of the business
• A site plan showing required on-site vehicle parking
• Any additional information required to confirm the business complies with applicable regulations

Certain types of businesses may require additional information as part of the application.

Applications are reviewed to ensure the proposed business meets applicable Town requirements, including zoning.

Before You Apply

Before signing a lease, purchasing a property or making other commitments for a business location, you are encouraged to confirm that the proposed business is permitted at that location.

Zoning, building, parking, fire safety or other requirements may apply depending on the type and location of the business.

Renewing Your Business Licence

Business licences are generally valid from January 1 to December 31 each year and must be renewed annually. Renewal fees must be paid on or before the last business day in February.

If the applicable fee remains unpaid as of March 1, a $100 late fee will be applied. If it remains unpaid as of April 1, the licence application will be terminated.

Changes to Your Business

Business licences cannot be transferred to another person. If a business is sold, the new owner must obtain a new business licence before operating the business.

Businesses must also notify the Town of changes to their premises, address or contact information and obtain an updated licence. A business relocating to a new location must ensure the new premises comply with applicable building, zoning and external agencies approvals.

An active business licence must be displayed in an area that is clearly visible when entering the business premises, unless otherwise directed by the Licence Inspector.

For mobile operations, a copy of the licence must be carried in the vehicle, equipment, or by the individual at all times while conducting business activities.

Prior to the Town issuing a Business Licence, other agencies may be required to submit a permit or report such as Interior Health (for food service establishments, food store, tattoo, piercing, hair, tanning etc...), Passenger Transportation Board (tour bus, taxi etc...) or the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch of BC (liquor store, winery, pub, cannabis shop,  etc...).

Depending on your business and how you plan to use your property or the area outside your business, you may need additional permits in addition to your Business Licence.

Sidewalk Permits

Businesses that want to place items on a public sidewalk may require a Sidewalk Permit Agreement. This can include signs, displays or other items placed outside the business that occupy or obstruct part of the sidewalk.

Building Permits
