Sign Permits

Applications for a sign permit are submitted to the Planning and Development Department. A separate application is required for each property or site, although an application may include more than one sign located on the same site.

Your application will need to include:

• the street address and legal description of the property;
• the applicant's information and signature;
• written authorization from the property owner if the applicant is not the owner;
• the name and contact information of the sign contractor or installer, if applicable;
• details about the type and number of signs being proposed; and
• the applicable permit fee.

Depending on your proposed sign, you may also be required to provide supporting documents with your application. These may include:

• a recent title search, State of Title Certificate or BC OnLine search;
• two sets of scaled drawings showing the location, type and dimensions of the proposed sign and any existing signs that will remain on the property;
• two sets of drawings showing proposed colours, finishes, graphics, materials, illumination and mounting methods;
• two sets of site plans showing buildings, driveways, service roads, pedestrian pathways and landscaped areas; and
• any additional information requested by the Building Inspector.

Providing complete and accurate information will help staff review your application.

When is Engineering required?

Engineering certification is required for certain types of signs, including:

• awning signs;
• canopy signs;
• projecting signs with a sign area greater than 0.5 m²; and
• free-standing signs, including foundation base design details.

The structural and material specifications must be certified by a registered structural engineer licensed to practice in British Columbia.

Do not begin sign work until your permit has been issued.

Once a permit is issued, all work must comply with the approved permit and the Town of Osoyoos Sign Bylaw. A sign permit expires if the approved signage is not completed within one year of the permit being issued.

Signs that encroach onto a provincial highway or highway right-of-way may require separate authorization from the Province of British Columbia. A Town sign permit does not authorize an encroachment within provincial highway jurisdiction.
