Help Keep Hazardous Materials out of Collection Bins

The Town has been notified of recent incidents of collected hazardous materials that have posed significant risk to recycling staff. One incident involved a cannister of bear spray that deployed in a sorting facility causing harm to staff. As well, a recent fire in a collection vehicle is suspected to have been caused by a battery. 

As a reminder, some common hazardous items include: 

  • Lithium-ion and household batteries
  • Single-use propane and butane canisters
  • Needles
  • Flammable liquids
  • Helium tanks
  • Knives
  • Flares
  • Electronics
  • Bear spray
  • Ammunition
  • Lighters
  • Paint
